the exciting Shabbat slicer

Alternately titled “Yael is easily amused.” Shopping in Bnei Brak is definitely a bit of a different experience than in Tel Aviv, especially when it comes to shopping for Shabbat. Last week I watched with great curiousity the women waiting in line to auto-slice their loaves of bread just before exiting the store. See there’s this big bread-slicing contraption that they wheel out for Fridays (Fridays seem to be the only day that loaves of unsliced bread are on sale because I wanted to get one and try out that slicer earlier in the week and there was no sign More >

Der Spiegel asks “Is the U.S. becoming too European?”

When even a German magazine asks this question and concludes…”Obama’s Misguided Approach: America has become too European

“The Obama administration and the Federal Reserve want to fix the United States economy by spending more money. But while that approach might work for Europe, it is risky for the US. The nation would be better off embracing traditional American values like self-reliance and small government.

There’s no question about it: The 20th century was America’s era. The United States rose rapidly from virtually nothing to become the most politically powerful and economically strongest country in the world. But the financial crisis and subsequent More >

Peaceful intentions? PA Honors Mother for Raising Killers, Human Rights Groups Attend

Yes, our peace partners are doing well on the first day of peace talks. The Palestinian Authority, of which Abbas is the leader, has just given an award to a woman for raising four sons who all murdered Israelis in terrorist attacks. Hey, how about that?! Oh but there’s more! From Arutz Sheva “PA Minister of Prisoners Affairs Issa Karake gave the “Shield of Resoluteness and Giving” to the mother of the Abu Hamid brothers, four of whom have been sentenced to life in prison for terrorism, in a ceremony reported by the PA daily Al-Hayat Al-Jadida and translated by Palestinian Media More >

Peace talks: Forgive me for not drinking the kool-aid yet

We’re entering into Deja Vu land, only this time without the huge upsurge of enthusiasm and hope on the Israeli side. Let’s see, we’ve had the opening series of pretty words from the American leader (we can insert Obama in here now), Netanyahu, the Israeli leader, has spoken of seeking “a historic compromise” (see previous variations of this from Ehud Olmert, Ehud Barak, double deja vu Netanyahu in 90s, Peres, Rabin…), and some rather wishy washy nice words from the Palestinian leader, this time around Abbas (deja vu Abbas 2006, Arafat multiple times). No wild enthusiasm and hope and hundreds More >

Breaking: Another terrorist attack against Israelis, 2 shot, one critically

Yesterday four Israelis were murdered near Hebron. Tonight there has been a second shooting attack in Route 60’s Rimonim junction in the Ramallah area.

Initial details suggest that fire was opened at an Israeli vehicle with two passengers. As a result of the shooting the vehicle turned over and landed in a ditch. There were two people in the car, the man is in critical condition, the woman passenger was injured. Both are at the Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital.

French teacher suspended for calling the holocaust “the holocaust” and teaching too much about it

A French history teacher has been suspended for calling the holocaust ‘a holocaust’ rather than using a more neutral word to describe it, teaching ‘too much’ about it, and not presenting it in an ‘objective’ light. Geez, how to objectively present the methodical genocide of more than 6 million people simply because of their religion? Oh of course, she should have been ‘objective’ and presented the Nazi’s rationale in a positive light! Tell the other side of it, of course!

Well and this makes utter sense since studies have shown that the majority of French children and young adults have never More >

10 years after the dramatic rescue and photo that started Honest Reporting

The media’s bias and lies against Israel are nothing new. “On September 30, 2000, The New York Times, Associated Press and other major media outlets published a photo of a young man — bloodied and battered — crouching beneath a club-wielding Israeli policeman. The caption identified him as a Palestinian victim of Israeli brutality — with the clear implication that the Israeli soldier was the one who beat him.

That young man was, in fact, Tuvia Grossman, a Jewish student from Chicago, who was beaten within inches of his life [My note: by a Palestinian mob] before being rescued by the More >

Gallup: Republicans have an unprecedented lead over Dems

Gallup has been conducting a generic ballot test since 1942. In all that time, Republicans never garnered more than a 5-point lead over the Democrats. Until now. In the poll conducted in August, Republicans have surged to a double-digit lead over Dems.

The poll also finds that Republicans are twice as likely to be “very enthusiastic” about voting — 50 percent say so, compared to just 25 percent of Democrats.
