Wow what a street score

So, on my way home from work about an hour ago I accidentally got off the bus one stop too early, as I am learning the new route to my apartment. There I was walking along, minding my own business and grousing to myself about my newly acquired blisters from the shoes I’d determined to either wear or to donate (my new policy –anything not worn in the last year must either be worn several times to justify its existence in my closet or it must go). Then I saw it. Leaning up against a fence, peaking out from an overhang of bushes, was a Kandinsky reprint. And not just any poster reprint. This one was very nicely framed and with real glass rather than plexiglass. It was also his Improvisation Gorge, painted in 1914, which is one of my favourites. And it was free to a good home. YIPEEE :)

Now, I have to say right now that I don’t know a lot about art other than what I like when I see it and what I don’t. But I do know a whole lot about Kandinsky and the other so-called Blue Riders. But, mostly, Kandinsky. He has been my very favourite painter since I was 16 years old when, on a visit to Houston, my very beloved uncle Bryan (who, being only 10 years older than me was more like an older brother) took me to a museum that had a whole special exhibit on Kandinsky (with a few Klee’s thrown in). I had gone along on this excursion with feelings of “oh g-d booorrrring” hidden behind a polite veneer of “yeah, museum, great.” After discovering Kandinsky, I kept my poor uncle there for 6 hours and, indeed, until the museum people tossed us out. He didn’t seem to mind too much as he seemed to enjoy explaining a lot more about the paintings, the various changes in Kandinsky’s style and philosophy over time, and Kandinsky’s life than the museum provided. It turned out that Kandinsky was also one of his favourite painters (and he himself was an amazing artist and also a cartoonist who had his cartoons carried in a good number of nationwide syndicated newspapers and in a variety of magazines).

Anyway, I walked away from that experience absolutely crazy about Kandinsky. I’ve gone to nearly every museum in Europe and New York that carries pieces by Kandinsky (yeah, I like Klee too but not so much) and probably 30 times to the Lenbachhaus in Muenchen (Munich) which has an amazing collection of his work.

You never know what good things will happen to you, even coming from mistakes!

Me too me too! I love Kandinsky. I bought a marvellous poster at the Guggenheim in NYC 2003. It is the blue mountain painting, which they actually had on exhibit when I was there. It is framed and above our sofa.

Love Klee, especially his N. Africa paintings.
