Now this is scary if true. The Daily Mail is reporting that

Up to eight police officers and civilian staff are suspected of links to extremist groups including Al Qaeda. Some are even believed to have attended terror training camps in Pakistan or Afghanistan. Their names feature on a secret list of alleged radicals said to be working in the Metropolitan and other forces.

Why haven’t they been fired if MI5 is aware of their links to terrorist groups? “Astonishingly, many of the alleged jihadists have not been sacked because – it is claimed – police do not have the “legal power” to dismiss them…..[and] Classified intelligence reports raising concerns about police staff’s background cannot be used to justify their dismissal.”

I’m sorry but that sounds totally crazy to me. If there is evidence, even tenuous evidence, that someone has links to terrorist groups, you should be able to dismiss them from the police force. These people have access to sensitive inside information, they have the ability to warn of upcoming raids or arrests or that someone is under surveillance to name only a few problems that having someone on the police staff who is a potential terrorist or, at the least, a terrorist sympathizer. This may have already happened:

Suspicions are growing that the gang behind the failed London bomb attacks could have received inside information about rescue procedures in the aftermath of an atrocity in the capital.

The Daily Mail can reveal that the second device parked near Haymarket was left at a designated “evacuation assembly point” where civilians and the emergency services would have gathered had the first bomb gone off.

Just last year it was discovered that a leading member of an extremist Islamic group was working as a senior official at the Home Office. Abid Javaid, the senior official in the Uk’s Home Office is a leading member of the group Hizb ut-Tahrir. This group has been banned in many other European countries, such as Denmark, but Britain has not yet –despite repeated attempts– placed it on the banned list because they aren’t considered to be encouraging violence despite the fact that the group promotes racism and anti-Semitic hatred, called suicide bombers martyrs, and urges Muslims to kill Jewish people “wherever you find them.” Just like 3 days ago I watched the arguments taking place in the House of Commons (via TV of course) trying to ban this group again with ample evidence presented showing that this group is indeed calling for violent action, most specifically against Jews but also against others.

Obviously, the extremist groups are trying to infiltrate all levels of government and key positions …and quite obviously they are succeeding. Equally obvious is that the British government is not doing enough to stop it and I fear that they are going to suffer the consequences somewhere down the line.
