why why didn’t I have my camera!
Yael is now feeding approximately 160 street cats and…a baby porcupine hedgehog. This is the second night that the baby porcupine hedgehog bellied up to the bar. It is SO cute. Tomorrow the camera comes along!

Do not touch it, porcupines are famous for their external parasites, lice, mites etc ………………

They are also schizoid! We occasionally had them in our yard in Africa. You do not want one of those cute spikes anywhere near you

PS How come it is separated from its mother? You might want to contact the zoo.

Aha, I just googled pics of hedgehogs and it is definitely a little hedgehog. Well, actually, it could possibly be an adult hedgehog. How big do hedgehogs get? It is darn cute and the cats eat right next to it!

If the thing is as large as a coconut it is an adult, young ones are something like an orange.

The possum that I feed here in Austin, Texas eats right next to the feral cats that I try to care for. They get along peachy.

It must be a hedgehog. We don’t have porcupines in Israel. They’re quite common, but certainly not in Tel Aviv!

Here’s a post showing photos of MANY hedgehogs in Tel Aviv; there was even a photo exhibit about them!

it must have been some one’s pet. African hedgehogs are kept as pets here in the USA. I have never heared of them running wild in Israel. Especially in the streets of Tel Aviv.
It would be safe to pick it up. If it seems to be affectionate or like to be held, it was probably a pet.
They live about four years. The eat cat food but also need occasional grubs and other things. They can be trained to use a litter box.

My daughter told me Hedgehogs are a popular pet in Vancouver, Canada. People keep them in their apartments.

Oh good, this means the next time it comes up I can pet it
I took my camera last night but it didn’t come up
Those pictures that Shari gave the link to are awesome. It’s like wow, who knew, hedgehogs on the loose in this urban environment!

You silly girl, do not pet the thing, it has parasites all over, you want to get a disease and be sorry for the rest of your life.

Yaeli, we have hedgehogs in our gardens (AmEng: yards) all the time, they are extremely cute and eat slugs and beetles. However, as Mongrel says, they are absolutely covered with parasites. They, and the grey squirrels and foxes that also wander through are the prime reason La Fluffita and now Otis have to be kept flea and worm free.
