What is this, a The Godfather remake?
Quite obviously there is a major mafia turf war going on. Shockingly, weeks ago while my Ema was still here, a young mother was gunned down on the beach in Bat Yam when some crazy mafia guys decided to try to kill some other mafia guys and sprayed bullets across a crowded beach. They killed the innocent young woman in front of her husband and children but of course missed their intended targets. Since then there have been several mafia bombing attempts, including a bomb placed next to a kindergarten in Netanya that was thankfully found before they could attempt to blow up another mafia guy and hordes of small children along with him. Bombs have been attached to cars. There was a shooting in a restaurant, owned by the Mafia, in Netanya in which four people were injured –including the original target of the Bat Yam attempt. Now, today, they shot at a car in Netanya and injured a baby.
Two things are clear: There is no way in hell I’m moving anywhere close to Netanya and these people need to be arrested, incarcerated and the key thrown away. I vote for a new law on the books, something like “association with organized crime, no matter in how mild a manner, gets an automatic jail sentence for life.”
The Godfather we really don’t need in this country. It is time to end the damn corruption in politics and on our streets.

Yeah, a crackdown on the mafia there is long overdue.

Errm, do all the Israeli Mafia really confine themselves to Netanya (also I believe a favourite haunt of Brit Jews with second homes– could be a coincidence, or maybe I’ve been too naive about my fellow London shulgoers). I’d sort of got the impression that some of them hang out in Tel Aviv where they have been known to set off carbombs and other such anti-social antics.

Judy –well you can find the mafia(s) all over the country –there are branches in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Petakh Tikva and so forth. We’ve actually got quite a number of different mafias in this country. We’ve got Arab-family mafiosos, we’ve got imported Russian mafiosos, and so forth. Netanya has long been a major mafia center. Several years ago when I first moved here, Netanya was high on my list of possible places to live (and until recent events was still a place I was considering). At that time a friend of mine, who was also looking for an affordable spot to “start a family,” warned me strongly that “in Netanya you run a real risk of moving in next door to someone connected to the mafia.” I considered that to be silly on his part until, in the wake of recent events, a good number of friends who live in and around Netanya are now quite worried that their house could accidentally be targeted or they could be caught in the crossfire because the family that lives next door, across the street, three buildings down and so forth are “hush hush it is an open secret” involved in the mafia.
