Did my vet lie?
Remember back when I first caught Shachori, back when my Ema and brother were visiting, and we passed her off to the new vet Tzachi? He was supposed to fix her and fix her leg. He had her for several days and he told me that she had already been fixed and that her ear was clipped. Granted with black cats flitting about on the street, it is difficult to tell if the ear has been clipped, signifying that they have been spayed or neutered, or not. I certainly had never remembered her ear being clipped. But, yes, he told me, the ear is already clipped so no need for spaying. Then he brought her back, I saw the ear was indeed clipped, but then she escaped the apartment. I recaptured her about a month ago, several weeks after she had freed herself, and she has been in my apartment ever since. One of the things I noticed was that her clipped ear was quite sensitive and very much not fully healed from its clipping. I didn’t think much of it.
Until the last 24 hours. Because you see, demur little 6-month-old Shachori is beside herself. She is running around the apartment making “that” sound –the constant mrrr mrrr mrreeeuueeeee of a cat in heat and distressed. She is attempting to uhhh entice the boys who mostly don’t know what to do with her and are running from her except for Arie who, though fixed himself, seems to think he is not and is trying to figure out what he should be doing though isn’t entirely sure. He is nearly as persistently unsure but trying as she is herself. She is grooming uh certain parts of her body constantly. And last but not least when I came home this evening I found her lying on my bed and later, after she got up, I found a bit of blood on my duvet –something that happens only when a female cat goes into heat –where she had been laying.
Finally, I remembered that clipped ear that still isn’t 100% healed and I’m thinking about the bare patch of hair on her arm from the shaving he did for her bloodwork that, though the hair is growing in finally, is still clearly visible. And I’m thinking about the fact that she has no bare patch on her tummy. Tinok had a clearly bare/very much shorter and stand-out-ish patch on her tummy for several months –visible far longer than her ear remained unhealed. And I’m really wondering if Shachori is really fixed.

Hmmmmmmmmm She is apparently NOT fixed. Get her to Ronen. Don’t use that other vet again. Maybe he did not lie, though he may have, but he is at the very least not thorough. You need a vet you can trust completely. Take that cat to Ronen; it will only get worse for you, her and everyone else!

I’m watching her right now and she is definitely in heat, there is absolutely no question. But now I’m wondering about Snaggle Tooth and the results of the test he did. Ronen told me that I must have been mistaken because we don’t have Feline leukemia here and it must have been Feline Aids –and what they do here is simply to remove the teeth for that because 99% of the infections of other cats come from a bite –but Tzachi specifically said it was leukemia…

Never, ever use him again. He must be crazy.

Yaeli, I don’t know if it’s the same with cats, but I know that sometimes when dogs are spayed, if a minute bit ovarian tissue is left behind, the dog will have a season, but will not become pregnant. You’re going to have to wait and see. Also, sometimes they make the incision in a place where it’s difficult to see any evidence, and also no bald patch.
Sorry, that was really badly written, but you get the gist of it

Chairwoman thanks for the information about the ovarian tissue! Here, when the Iriyah neuters they generally remove a large patch of hair from the cats’ side for the operation –so if you see cats around Tel Aviv missing most of their hair along one side in a big rectangular patch, you know the Iriyah has done a mitzvah. Only one of the Iriyah vets that I know of shaves the tummy instead. The three vets I’ve used pre-Tzachi all shave the hair off the tummy. I’ve not come across any vets here who do not shave either the side or the tummy and since she’s a street cat I’d assume when he told me she was spayed already that it must have been the Iriyah that did it and that it must have been very recent. I was quite surprised when he told me she was spayed because she’d been on my “to-spay when old enough” list for several months as the vets here won’t spay before 5-6 months of age. I’ve been feeding her since she was about 8 weeks old.

Well, obviously then, she cannot have been spayed. I worry about the cat that was put down, perhaps needlessly. Don’t use this vet again. Go ahead and arrange to ship out the first cat to me or to Siamese Rescue. Continental told me that the cat can be shipped from Tel Aviv to its destination. No one need meet the cat in New York. It can go straight to me. So, start making air cargo arrangements with Continental
Perhaps we can get some of these cats and kittens into permanent homes soon.

Fantastic news. I’m calling Ronen this evening about the paperwork for the white kitten we caught, neutered and vaccinated last week so I can get him shipped over.

I would love to bring my cyber kitties home, but I don’t think that Israel is one of the countries from where animals have to be quarantined for 6 months. I believe it costs a couple of thousand pounds per animal, and they have to spend all that time in a special cattery in the middle of nowhere.

Chairwoman I’m planning on getting your cyberkitties into safety as soon as I can! I wish I could send them to you as well! I’ll ask around with the vet and the embassy and see what I can find out about cats going to the UK from here –I know they changed the rule about having to board the kitties if they come in from the U.S. so long as they have a chip implanted but I think you are right and they still have it in place for us third world places.

Any of the kitties that we get out will go to good homes
I’ll try to get them in my vet’s adoption program! Siamese Rescue will help, and I’ll be very active in finding them homes. There are more cats than good homes though, so it is always a challenge to find good placements.
