really disappointed and pissed

really disappointed and pissed

This morning I was to have an extremely important doctor’s appointment, one I’ve been looking forward to for months. Last night I hardly slept, waking up every couple of hours afraid I’d not heard the alarm going off. I got up and checked and re-checked that I had all my documents in order. I saw my doctor on Thursday and everything was running perfectly on schedule for today. It was raining outside in torrents as I got ready to leave and I braved the nearly blinding, driving rain and waded across a street flooded to my knees. The umbrella proved More >

Hiding spending doesn’t reduce spending: U.S. healthcare reform

Hiding spending doesn’t reduce spending: U.S. healthcare reform

I think Paul Ryan should run for President. He very clearly and concisely points out to Obama how the healthcare bill proposed does not reduce the deficit and it does not control costs but instead dramatically increases the deficit. “The bill is full of gimmicks and smoke and mirrors” he says, and goes on to explain exactly what they are, including the fact that they are double-counting funds, hiding spending, and so forth….well worth a listen!

Iceberg may change ocean –and weather– patterns

Iceberg may change ocean –and weather– patterns

There is a new iceberg adrift in the ocean the size of the country of Luxembourg. No, it wasn’t global warming that caused it to break free in Antarctica but rather being slammed full on by the long adrift B9B iceberg of nearly the same size. The collision caused quite a shake-up, causing half of the floating tongue of the Mertz Glacier to sheer off. The B9B “gave it a pretty big nudge. They are now floating right next to each other.”

Experts say the shearing off of the ice tongue and the presence of the new Mertz and old More >

Kitty Cat Friday (photos): Who’s your Daddy?

Kitty Cat Friday (photos): Who’s your Daddy?

I haven’t done a “kitty cat Friday” post in a long time so I thought I’d do a really big catch-up on this one. The focus of this one is on kittens Flora, Flossy and Little Mouse and the large number of adoptive parents in my household taking them under their wing.

I’ll start by introducing the newest little troublemakers bundles of joy in my house. You may recall that I went to the shuk here in Tel Aviv on a hot early September Friday morning in search of fresh tomatoes…and came home with these little guys who were so More >

If it was laughable before…the Israeli passport scam and Dubai

I posted like a week ago about the fact that it was really laughable that the Mossad was behind the hit in Dubai because they were reporting that at least 11 and perhaps as many as 14 people were involved and the Mossad, as every single known incident of operation has shown, uses very small teams in its operations –the largest number being 7, with the majority of the agents not “on site” but rather giving technical support etc from distant locales. Even in the capture of the notorious genocidal maniac Eichmann only a handful of agents were involved. And if More >

New beginnings, the start of a new semester

There is always something special about the start of a new semester. I felt this as a student and maybe even more now as a Professor. As a student, I was always excited about the world that was going to be opened up to me (I hoped) in my classes –the new perspectives, the new knowledge I’d gain. I’d go to the bookstore at the earliest opportunity and come home full of excitement with the piles of books we were required to purchase for classes (kids don’t buy any books here) and spread them out on my bed, leafing through More >

Livni’s wicked sense of humour

Maybe because it is being up and awake at 6:30 a.m. and getting ready for a very long day that I’m finding myself still laughing after reading a comment that Tzippi Livni made regarding the international reaction and finger-pointing at Israel for the assassination of arch-terrorist al-Mabbouh in Dubai,”

“What was disproportionate this time? Was there a disproportionate use of passports?”

Don’t hold the press but stop the mail(bomb)!

Well this is lovely. It seems someone has decided to send quite a few letter bombs by post here in the country. Mail didn’t come today, at least to my apartment, because two packages containing bombs turned up at a post office in Migdal HaEmek. They put out a notice that all package collection and so forth would be suspended until further notice (meaning if my biology and chemistry books have arrived in country it could be a while before I see them). There was a false alarm in Beit Shemesh, causing an evacuation there. Now, there is a suspicious More >

the instalator is having difficulty

The instalator is in there fighting with the toilet. It sounds something like from a batman cartoon. POW. BAM. CRASH. He keeps saying, ‘lo tov li” and “ze lo yafeh”. It is providing unending amusement for the cats, however. Are these my cats? I keep asking myself. Cos you know, the cats I thought I had were cats that ran and hid under beds for hours and sometimes days when an ‘intruder’ entered the house, especially if the intruder is male and most definitely if he is making the kinds of noises and grunts coming from the shirutim. But obviously More >
