what is it about Ohio and serial killers?
Oct 31st
When I went off to school in Ohio, one of my neighbours greeted me with “Welcome to Ohio, the Serial Killer Capitol of the World.” Ohio had the dubious distinction, she told me, of producing more serial killers than any other State– some were born there and some spent most of their childhoods there. After reading today about the newest serial killer, currently on the loose in Ohio, I got a bit more than curious as to just how many serial killers hailed from Ohio. What I’ve found so far is this:
Neal Bradley Long and Charles Manson were both born More >
the blessing (and curse) of rain
Oct 31st
We need rain quite desperately and for the last two days, we’ve been getting it by the buckets. Unfortunately, the rain is accompanied by large amounts of lightning and thunder. So yesterday, I got up at 7 ready to do a marathon of errands, including going to Orange to get a new phone and seeking out a black dress for the wedding. I went nowhere. I couldn’t even go out to take out the trash or the litter (and I really needed to change out the litter!) I don’t mind going out and about in rain. In fact, I rather like More >
the new locked door policy
Oct 28th
I always lock my office door at BGU. Always. But at the IDC, being small and ‘exclusive’ and where the kids drive cars that cost as much as some apartments, I’m a bit more lax. I was a bit more lax. If I was leaving the floor, I locked the door. But if I was just popping into a colleagues office two doors down for a quick question, I’d leave the door not only unlocked but semi-open. Yesterday just such a scenario occurred and I popped into a colleague and close friend’s office simply to inquire when we would be More >
kerplumped
Oct 26th
I just got home and kerplumped down on the couch. Busy day today. I got to school at 9 a.m., printed some things for class, took several phonecalls (work-related), taught 2 classes back-to-back and then had a 10 minute break before holding the first research club meeting. That was really fun. And actually, teaching the classes were fun with the students very involved in discussion (who are you and what have you done with the little people who left on summer break last semester?). Then I had more meetings. I didn’t have time to eat or to photocopy the chapters More >
The year from hell has begun
Oct 22nd
Yes, Ema and everyone, I’m alive though whether I will survive this upcoming year with my schedule of 11 courses, conferences, writing grant proposals, thesis and dissertation advisement, running the Research Club (I must have been insane coming up with that one), trying to do research, and so forth seems a bit questionable if the last two weeks are any measure, lol. I have not had time to take a breath. I started a blog post a couple of days ago and actually fell asleep in the middle of trying to write it, while sitting up. And the semester has More >
Nobel win: I’m feeling sorry for Obama
Oct 10th
Obama has just been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He was nominated for the prize less than two weeks after taking the office of the Presidency (when the deadline for nominations ended) and been in office for not yet 10 months and hasn’t yet had time to accomplish anything at all along the lines of what previous Nobel winners have done. Indeed, the committee that awarded him the Nobel said that it is not for what he has accomplished basically, but for what they hope he will accomplish. The news of his win dropped jaws around the world, not simply More >
rectally exploding terrorists and tsunamis
Oct 7th
I thought I’d do my duty and make everyone a little more paranoid than they already are. It is only fair, now that I’ve just become more paranoid myself in light of these tidbits of news. First we’ll take tsunamis. You guys are probably all well-aware of my tsunami phobia, especially in light of the one that hit Thailand. And then there was the one last week that hit in Samoa. But, you know, those are tsunamis in other places and in our quiet little neck of the Med it seemed relatively unlikely that we’d ever have one. Oh but More >
busy day and thank you Sarah
Oct 6th
This was an all-around seriously busy day from early morning until now and, after i eat a bit, until I fall into bed. I had the really sad and tearful task of hugging goodbye my very dearest friends here who are making yerida back to South Africa. Indeed, their plane should be taking off very shortly. We got together for ice cream and lots of hugs and cuddles to the baby, who is really starting to be a “big boy” now that he’s learned to walk and, well, walk quickly! It still doesn’t really quite seem like it is possible More >
some days are good
Oct 4th
This was one of them: an all-around good day. I got a lot more done than I expected and there is always that intense satisfaction with checking each thing off the list, especially when a couple of those things are things you’ve been avoiding and you finally get them out of your hair.
I am very much enjoying having light again in my kitchen. You might recall that about this time last year the light in the kitchen died and needed to be replaced. I bought the flourescent bulb to replace it but then had the problem of a) being More >
why do things always break on Shabbat?
Oct 3rd
The hot water heater fixing guy is here. He’s been here for nearly 3 hours. Last night I woke up to what sounded like the pitter patter of rain. I got up to use the bathroom and felt “rain” pitter patter on my face. Right, water falling from the ceiling. I went outside and turned off the water to the apartment, thinking what the hell now. I didn’t know (it was 2 a.m. after all) whether the problem was in my apartment or coming from the apartment above me. I woke up this morning to find water still pitter pattering More >
